Green Tea Extract, Insulin And Androgens: The PCOS/PMOS Connection

Green tea is probably best known for its antioxidants, but this clinical trial suggests its benefits may extend to two particularly important areas of PCOS: insulin and androgens.

Importantly, the researchers were looking at green tea taken in supplement form, rather than cups of brewed green tea.

After 12 weeks, the women taking the green tea supplement experienced significant improvements in fasting insulin, free testosterone and body weight.

Green Tea Was Linked With Lower Free Testosterone

One of the most interesting findings was a significant reduction in free testosterone after 12 weeks of green tea supplementation.

This matters because free testosterone is one of the androgens that can contribute to symptoms such as:

• Acne
• Increased facial or body hair
• Scalp hair thinning

The researchers did not measure these symptoms themselves, but they did show a change in an important hormonal marker associated with them.

Fasting Insulin Improved Too

The women taking green tea also experienced a significant reduction in fasting insulin.

This is particularly interesting in PCOS because insulin and androgens are closely connected.

When insulin levels remain high, insulin can signal the ovaries to produce more androgens. This can create a cycle where metabolic and hormonal changes begin feeding into each other.

So rather than looking at insulin and testosterone as two completely separate problems, this study gives us another example of just how interconnected they can be.

Why This Insulin + Testosterone Connection Is So Interesting

This may be the most useful takeaway from the study.

The researchers did not just see a change in weight. They saw improvements in both a metabolic marker and an androgen marker at the same time.

For women with PCOS, this is important because supporting insulin regulation may have benefits that reach beyond blood sugar alone.

It may also help influence the hormonal environment contributing to androgen-related symptoms.

Green Tea Contains EGCG And Other Catechins

Green tea naturally contains a group of plant compounds called catechins, with EGCG being one of the best known.

The researchers discuss these catechins as biologically active components of green tea and highlight previous research investigating their effects on metabolism.

The green tea used in this particular trial was provided as capsules rather than brewed tea, making the research particularly interesting when looking at concentrated green tea extracts used in supplements.

There Was Also A Meaningful Change In Weight

Over the 12 weeks, average weight in the green tea group fell from approximately 86.7 kg to 82.9 kg, a reduction of around 3.8 kg.

The average weight of the placebo group remained almost unchanged.

This adds another interesting layer to the findings because body composition, insulin and androgen levels can all interact in PCOS.

And These Changes Happened Within 12 Weeks

The researchers measured these changes after three months of consistent supplementation.

This is a helpful reminder that nutritional support is generally about what happens with consistency over time.

Rather than expecting an immediate hormonal change, this study looked at what could shift after 12 weeks of regular use.

What Does This Mean For PCOS/PMOS?

What makes this research particularly interesting is that green tea extract appeared to influence both sides of an important PCOS relationship.

Fasting insulin decreased.

Free testosterone decreased.

And body weight decreased.

Because higher insulin can encourage greater ovarian androgen production, improving metabolic health can potentially have flow-on effects for the hormonal environment too.

For this reason, green tea extract is particularly interesting when thinking about nutritional strategies aimed at supporting healthy insulin regulation alongside healthy androgen levels.

This was a small clinical trial specifically in overweight and obese women with PCOS, so we still need more research. But it provides promising human evidence that the benefits of green tea extract may extend beyond its antioxidant properties alone.

One of the things I find most interesting about this research is that green tea extract did not appear to influence just one isolated part of PCOS. After 12 weeks, the women taking it had improvements in fasting insulin and free testosterone, two pathways that are very closely connected.

That relationship really matters in PCOS/PMOS. Higher insulin can encourage the ovaries to produce more androgens, which is why I am always interested in research that looks at the metabolic and hormonal sides of PCOS together rather than treating them as completely separate issues.
