What is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a highly debilitating condition that affects at least 1 in 10 women. The main symptom is usually pain which is often severe. This pain is not always isolated to the pelvic area like regular period pain, but may be felt in the legs, bladder, rectum or stomach, and doesn't always occur just at menstruation. Other related symptoms can include bladder problems (urgency, painful urination), bowel problems (diarrhoea, constipation, bloating), nausea/vomiting, headaches and infertility.
What causes endometriosis?
Endometriosis is not a hormonal condition, as commonly misunderstood, but an inflammatory condition that is influenced by hormones. New research suggests that endometriosis is driven by immune dysfunction and worsened by hormones like oestrogen. Unfortunately, conventional treatment primarily aims to suppress hormone production, which does not address the root cause of the condition.
