Digestion and Gut Issues
Why is digestion important?
Digestion is the way that we take energy and nutrients from food and break them down to fuel the body.
Bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, nausea and reflux are all signs that your digestive system is not functioning properly. When your gut is not happy, it is unable to efficiently break down and absorb foods, meaning that no matter how nutrient-dense your diet is, you are not receiving all of the benefits. This can result in a whole range of symptoms like poor energy, skin conditions, hormonal imbalances and autoimmune diseases.
How does Nutritional Medicine help digestion?
Nutritional Medicine strategies address digestion issues by soothing and healing issues in the gut lining, addressing nutrient deficiencies, identifying food allergies/intolerances, and supporting the gut microflora balance.
What happens if I'm not digesting properly?
When your digestive system is out of balance, direct effects can often be seen in other body systems. There is a strong link between the gut and brain, therefore a poorly functioning gut may present with psychological symptoms like depression and anxiety. Many researchers now agree that a disrupted gut is a likely contributor to endometriosis and other period problems.
Symptoms of a poorly functioning digestive system include:
- reflux/heart burn
- nausea and vomiting
- lack of appetite
- feeling of "fullness" after meals
- growling stomach
- stomach pain/cramping
- food intolerances
- nutrient deficiencies e.g. iron deficiency
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome (IBD): Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis
We can work together to identify the root cause of your digestive symptoms and employ simple nutritional and lifestyle strategies to bring you back in to balance. Book an appointment today.
